Vintage Soviet Russian Lacquer Box “The Frog Princess” Made in USSR BD-297

Vintage Soviet Russian lacquer box, hand-painted with a scene from the classic Russian folk fairy tale «Царевна-лягушка» (Tsarevna-Lyagushka), translated as “The Frog Princess.”)

The miniature depicts three traditionally dressed figures in a stylized folkloric landscape, painted in rich reds, earth tones, and greens against a glossy black lacquer ground. The scene is titled in gold Cyrillic script along the lower front edge of the lid, confirming the fairy-tale subject.

Constructed of papier-mâché with a black lacquer exterior and deep red lacquer interior, this piece is characteristic of mid-to-late Soviet export lacquer production inspired by the Fedoskino tradition. The base is hand-marked “Made in USSR” with factory model code BD-297, a catalog designation rather than an artist signature.

Good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age and normal handling. No cracks, chips, or paint loss noted. Interior lacquer remains glossy and intact.
