Vintage cobalt label under glass (LUG) apothecary bottle or jar from the turn of the 20th century. Originally contained Fluid Extract of Gelsemium (a 70% ethanol extract of yellow jasmine root). Preparations containing gelsemium were often prescribed for treating neuralgia and migraine headaches, as well as for relieving uterine pain and rheumatic pain. This is an unusual bottle/stopper for dispensing volatile liquids. It appears to be machine made, but there is no maker's mark. Unlike most pouring bottles with ground glass stoppers, this smooth stopper would have had a thin cork layer (which is no longer there) to seal the neck. The translucent blue bottle is about 2 3/4 inches in diameter and about 8 3/4 inches tall. The label is black and white, with a gold and red trim. There is significant damage to the label and the cover glass (see pictures). Overall, the bottle is in good to very good used condition, with no fleabites, chips or cracks (other than the label damage).
