Ancient Early Celadon Pottery Koryo Pedestal Urn Offering Cup for ancestors. Former museum piece.

Signed in the ancient way underglaze with an " X "

One thing is certain; this is the only one in the world like it.

Provenance: deaccessioned from University of Minnesota Museum to Butterfield's auction house in 1998.

Age: Genuine ancient; 918 to 1392; I estimate 1250; possibly much earlier
Size: 3.95 x almost 4".
Style: Characteristic serene, elegant serene, mild look in color and form prized by Koreans for the feeling it gives a room. It is believed these pieces carry the spirit of the potters who preferred anonymity (thus the "X" signature).

Condition: Excellent. No damage. One kiln original fine 2" underglaze hairline.

Celadon dates to the three kingdoms period in now-Korea (57BC to 668AD). Thus, this could be much older because early pieces were weighty and irregular. Later-dated celadon pieces became more refined as later Korea began to reproduce those of the Chinese Song.
